Harry seemed to be an especially gassy baby, which is perfectly normal for any baby under two months old, but we were finding hard to cope. We enrolled in an infant massage class with Arlinda Micheal at the Madison Birth Center and learned some very useful techniques to help Harry be more comfortable. I recommend an infant massage class to anyone with a new baby that hasn't already taken one. This was a godsend.

Our daughter was VERY gassy until she was 6 months old. To the point that she cried so hard she burst a blood vessel in her eye! The best thing we found to do for her was to carry her facing outward. You have your arm across her tummy and chest area which helped her. I'm not sure why. I guess it helped push out the gas. All I know is if I carried her this way she would almost instantly stop crying.

Meadow hasn't been a particularly gassy baby, but we did take Arlinda's massage class and we loved it!! Unfortunately, we haven't been keeping up with routine massaging lately... I remember that we discussed in the class how difficult it can be to just SLOW DOWN enough to find time for massage. Massage definitely helps us explore and cherish each little moment with babe...

All I know is if I carried her this way she would almost instantly stop crying. One of the tips we found particularly helpful from Arlinda was to hold the baby with one arm around the chest/under the arms, and to put the other hand kind of under the baby/in the crotch/bottom area. Then to gently move the baby only using the hand underneath, in small, circular movements. Only move the bottom half of baby's body. After a few times, alternate the circles- clockwise for about five times, then counterclockwise for another five times. This helped Harry fart like nobody's business! Probably the way it worked for you? Stephanie- I'm right there with you on the time for massage thing. Harry rarely gets them but when he does, he LOOOOOVES them. He's at a point now where he wants to help massage himself (adorable!) but there are also places he doesn't tolerate massage as well because it's a little ticklish.
