 Hitting, biting and other hurting
« Thread Started on Apr 29, 2008, 6:53pm »

Harry gets violent when he's upset. His favorite ways to lash out are hitting and head-butting.
A dear friend of mine, and mother of eight, shared with me her technique for dealing with this issue that needs to be tended to NOW. What do you know? She knows what she's doing! It works, so long as I'm consistent and don't become self conscience in front of other parents.

When he hurts, I'll give him one swat on the butt- not hard enough to leave a mark but hard enough to let him know that his butt was just swatted. Sit down with him in a low distraction area (not always possible, I know) and explain that we are a family. We don't hurt each other, we love each other and take care of each other. After this "conversation", he's settled and we give each other love and he's back to being my little affectionate angel. While using this technique, he recognizes when he's about to hurt and I've seen him stop himself mid hit. Or at least slow it down and give a love pat and then a hug. Also, these painful (I've wound up with a slightly broken nose and a black eye) outbursts happen less frequently.

My friends says that it's important for them to leave the discipline with love in their hearts. I couldn't agree more and what a wonderful way to go about parenting!
